Schulze, Klaus: En=Trance

Continuing with rereleases of the Klaus Schulze catalogue by MIG Music we have En=Trance, originally released in 1988 as a double LP. On this album Schulze goes it completely alone with just him and his keyboards/electronics.

On the original release each track fit nicely on a side beginning with the almost nineteen minute title track. An ominous mood is portrayed, with a huge depth and space, sometimes disjointed leading to crisp keyboards and synth textures led by computer generated rhythms. Swells of string synths and digital keyboards highlight the shimmering "α-Numerique" amidst crystalline keyboard lines that convey a cold-like hardness. Again, this music will put you in a trance if you let it. With "FM Delight" the sound is incredibly lush with a slightly warmer sound before ending the album proper with "Velvet System", my favourite track on the disc. A lush keyboard soundscape is introduced, slowly building in volume as more keyboards are added. Dramatic choral-like bursts bring an intensity to the sound that are most welcome. This edition includes a bonus track titled "Elvish Sequencer" featuring sequenced keyboards with an immaculately crisp and clear sound.

With songs this long there is bound to be a repetitiveness at play and that is indeed the case. However, it isn't an issue as the flow, trance-like nature and clean and crisp sounds are like an addictive drug for your ears. Before you know it the five tracks are over and it's time to start all over again. Recommended for electronic music fans across the board.
