Crenshaw, SaRon: Drivin'

SaRon Crenshaw is a name that has escaped me until now. His first studio album is titled Drivin' and follows his live disc Tight, Cranky & Loose released in 2009. Although his discography is sparse the blues guitarist has been around for many years performing and playing with a number of artists including B.B. King and Robert Cray.

Drivin' is a two disc set and Crenshaw's smooth soulful vocals and tasty guitar (acoustic and electric) are highlighted throughout.

The first disc begins with the title track, a catchy bit of blues with Crenshaw's invigorated stabs of lead guitar. On the ten plus minute "World Of Misery" there is ample room for Crenshaw's tortured lyrics and searing guitar. "Pilot Light" is another long track with fiery guitar work throughout its laid back soulful groove.

Highlights from the second disc include the tasty acoustic blues of "Jailor Blues" featuring Crenshaw's wonderfully rich voice as well as Eric Finland's fine piano work, the huge builds of soaring guitar and horns in the excellent "Feel Like Crying" and the laid back bluesy cool of "Memories", a nice slice of R&B. Similar to Steely Dan if they were doing blues music. The percolating organ and crisp lead guitar in "Betty Lane" is another winner. His guitar really sings in this one and his acoustic playing in the catchy "I Hear The Music" is absolutely superb.

Crenshaw and his band have crafted a wonderful blues rock disc that is both gritty and smooth and soulful to the core. Highly recommended to any fan of the blues.
