Beck, Robin: Love is Coming

Robin Beck remains best known for the huge UK No.1 hit "First Time" from the Coca-Cola commercials which aired in 1988. Trouble or Nothin' is a pretty revered album as well, so much so that Beck re-recorded it later down the line. She's made a succession of solid-to-excellent albums whilst remaining solidly in the box marked, "cult." All those records have been resolutely 80s style melodic rock in the style of "First Time" or "Trouble or Nothin' " and all are worth of your attention. On Love Is Coming, Beck, alongside husband and collaborator James Christian (keys and percussion on "Crave The Touch") and Clif Magness (Steve Perry, Avril Lavigne) who plays practically everything apart from Tommy Denander's guitar solo on "Love Is Coming" and rhythm guitars on "On The Brightside"; John Huldt's guitar solo on "Crave The Touch", have trotted outside the AOR box to create something similar yet different to what she is known for.

Clif Magness is arguably the dominant force on Love Is Coming and one can easily see a more modern, almost punkier approach especially on the opener "Island". This isn't a typical Robin Beck album but the voice remains resolutely Robin Beck-like but with a different soundscape for the most. Yes, there's a big ballad yet there's many a moment of melodic rock excellence ("On the Bright Side/ Me Just Being Me") all wrapped up in a new and quite impressive direction.
