Hell in the Club: See You on The Dark Side

"Think of a playlist comprised of your favorite '80s hard rock bands like Motley Crue, Def Leppard, and the like mixed with the cream of the crop of '80s heavy metal like DIO, Accept, Helloween, and the like.," gushes the latest hyperbolic press release from Italy's Frontiers Records. It continues, "Now, imagine if all those classic songs started to play over each other and overlap and merge with one another and you'll start to have a sense of Hell In The Club's sound. Familiar, yet wholly unique. Riffs, big hooks, catchy choruses, and gang vocals are the order of the day as they mix classic hard rock and modern sounds, heavy metal and party songs, fifties rock'n'roll and anything in between". Phew, this had better be akin to the Second Coming to justify that level of hype!

To be honest, it's not bad, not bad at all. It certainly isn't anything like the hype and absolutely not, "wholly unique." Arguably it is the familiarity of the material that is the greatest strength of See You on The Dark Side. A key reference point would be Cinderella and given their lack of material over the years it isn't unreasonable to suggest that Cinderella fans will dig the living daylights out of this one. Similarly, a number of these tunes lend themselves to a Mötley Crüe-style video cruising down the Strip looking for strippers. There is the odd interesting diversion such as the jazzy section of "I Wanna Swing Like Peter Parker" or the blusesy nature of "Little Toy Soldier" but mainly Hell in the Club have produced a pretty decent 80s sleaze metal album which is definitely worth a listen.
