Golden Caves: Collision

Freia Music continues to impress with its burgeoning roster of talented bands. The latest in the cue is the debut album titled Collision from Dutch band Golden Caves. The band was formed while all five musicians were attending college in Rotterdam. You might label this music as contemporary prog, alternative prog or modern rock, but whichever it is it should be worthy of your attention.

While this is not a full blown progressive rock album as the band uses conventional song construction, this is not your typical run of the mill rock band either. Although Golden Caves will not awe you with ultra-fast shredding and countless time signature changes there is more here than meets the eye, or in this case ear. There is a depth here that you might not catch on first listen as this is a very 'smart' production. On the album opening "Child Of Mine" a slight off kilter rhythmic groove and a solid base of keyboards with some effective pace changes makes for a fine track. A sparse beat and swirling guitar riffs that build into some heavier moments and excellent female lead vocals from Romy Ouwerkerk highlight the excellent "Doctor's Prescription". "Mother" mixes the slow and dreamy with an addictively energetic chorus while "Bring Me To The Water" features a layered vocal arrangement, a soaring chorus and nice builds. The catchy "Maze" is another excellent track with a varied tempo and lush strings and keyboards.

Collision is an excellent debut album filled with intelligent modern rock music that should sit very well amongst progressive music fans. They are certainly a band to watch for in the near future.

The album was produced, mixed and mastered by progressive rock notable Christiaan De Bruin.
