Newman: Aerial

Some eleven albums and twenty years into their career, Newman – the band formed around the melodic vocalist Steve Newman – are back with Aerial, their first album of new material since 2015's The Elegance Machine. This time around Newman is joined by long serving drummer Rob McEwan along with a guest vocal appearance by Mark Thompson-Smith and the album has been mastered by Harem Scarem's Harry Hess.

Specialist AOR / Melodic Rock label AOR Heaven regularly churn out albums such as this that largely follow a familiar hook-laden path and are centred around the talents of one singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist such as Steve Newman. Whilst coming across as very formulaic, fortunately Aerial is backed up by some solid tunes and polished performances with just the right blend of punchy rockers ('Fear of Flying', 'You Don't Me') and mid-tempo harmony enriched anthems ('Don't Wake The Lion', 'Can't Stop Loving You'). Newman is also about to make his debut as part of the revamped line-up of Burn with the upcoming Ice Age album but until then the melodic rock faithful will certainly be satisfied with the results of his latest endeavours.
