Black Mare: Death Magick Mother

When I was young, I listened to The Cure's Faith and Seventeen Seconds over and over and over. I loved them because they were brooding, beautiful, moody, and dark. I also loved Siouxsie and the Banshees, especially the way Siouxsie Sioux's voice could rise and fall with such power and grace. I realize Black Mare is not simply replicating the sounds and styles of a different generation; nevertheless, this album bears a significant family resemblance to them. As I listened to this album, I was taken back to my childhood and to my then-growing fascination with music that was both introspective and dark. Even though the similarities are clearly stated on this album, Black Mare isn't simply looking back or being imitative. This is, instead, a labor of love, a musical project dedicated to the quiet, the atmospheric, and the powerful. If it also takes us back to powerful memories and emotions, so much the better.

Black Mare is Sera Timms's solo project. If you don't recognize her name, you've probably heard her sing (or play bass) in bands like Ides of Gemini and the sadly-disbanded Black Math Horseman. She's known for music that is loud, heavy, and challenging. With Black Mare, however, she dials things back to create something inviting and introspective. As the band's promo materials put it, "Her songs traverse hidden realms, fragments of dreams, submerged memories, and mythical imagery." That's exactly right. This is a wonderful new release. Highly Recommended.
