Tau Cross: Pillar of Fire

Pillars of fire suggest majesty, mystery, and power. Even if these words may not describe this album exactly, they certainly capture the band's thematic interest in mysticism, mythology, and politics. Like other introspective punk bands, Tau Cross seeks meaning in human chaos. On this album, the band's second, the music is dark and moody, raspy and brooding. Tau Cross draws on the talents of Amebix bassist / frontman Rob "The Baron" Miller, Voivod drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, and members of Misery and War/ Plague. Together, they create an effective amalgam of Killing Joke and Motörhead with just a slight touch of sludge metal. The songs on this album are consistently strong. I enjoyed "The Big House," "Bread and Circuses," "Deep State," and the title track (a surprisingly mellow composition) the most, but I recommend taking a deep dive on this one. If you stick around for the closing track, "What is a Man," you'll hear Tau Cross at their introspective and poetic best. This is a powerful new release from a band with a bright future.
