Steelheart: Through Worlds of Stardust

I've often stated just how important a lead off track to a new album really is; you want to hook the listener in right from the get-go, and in this day and age when so many people just purchase random songs in a digital download format, grabbing the 'old school' music buyer will keep them coming back to this format. Such is the case with "Stream Line Savings" off the new album Through Worlds of Stardust from veteran rockers Steelheart. This tune just oozes something special from this longstanding Connecticut outfit, images of Led Zeppelin, Kingdom Come, and Bad Company just seeping through the cracks, the immense grooves, sultry vocals, and bluesy hard rock riffs addicting from the first few notes and never letting go from there. It's a fantastic way to start the album, the first from the band in 9 years, which is not surprising as they've been anything but prolific on the recording front since their inception way back in 1990.

The rest? Well, it's also quite good for the most part. "My Dirty Girl" and "Come Inside" both also have that confidence permeating each and every crevice, vocalist Miljenko Matijevic putting on a clinic of hard rock majesty, while "My Word" and "Got Me Running" contain a wealth of thunderous grooves and heavy guitar riffs. Fans of Steelheart's penchant for the ballad will find a few here, such as "You Got Me Twisted", "Lips of Rain", "I'm So In Love With You", and a few more, Matijevic showing off his softer side in equally fine fashion. If I have any criticism of Through Worlds of Stardust, it's that there are too many mellow songs after such a killer opening barrage, but truth be told even the ballads are of high quality, so I can't fault the band much. The sad truth is that Steelheart originally burst on the scene 2 or 3 years too late to take advantage of the heights of the '80s hard rock scene before grunge crushed it all to oblivion, but thankfully they are still out there creating new, enjoyable music. This latest is very solid, and will easily please longtime fans. And, yes, it's now available on none other than Frontiers Records.
