Black Stone Cherry: Black To Blues

Paying tribute to the music that inspired them, Black Stone Cherry are going Black To Blues. Even with the outfit right at the head of the current new-Rock pack, it isn't too much of a stretch to imagine their music coming from these authentic origins. However, it's still to their credit that these lads can take deep, dirty classics like Howlin' Wolf's 'Built For Company' or the trio of Muddy Waters cuts 'Champagne & Reefer', 'Hoochie Coochie Man' and 'I Want To Be Loved' and make them their own, while never losing sight of the songs' origins. Chris Robertson sounds right at home whether belting out the lyrics with authority or bringing a more authentic blues croon, while the respect shown by the trio of guitarist Ben Wells, bassist Jon Lawhon and drummer John Fred Young illustrates just how much the quartet understand the songs they're reworking. With Robertson also adding some tasty lead guitar licks, the blurring of the traditional approach and the instantly recognisable Black Stone Cherry attack is a really interesting surprise.

With the final tracks being Albert King's 'Born Under A Bad Sign' and Freddie King's 'Palace Of The King', there's no denying that these are well loved, if not sacred cuts. The way that Black Stone Cherry have stamped their authority on them ably demonstrating the band's obvious affection and respect for the blues.
