Crosby & Nash with Neil Young: The 1972 Broadcast
I just love revisiting the music of my youth and this latest platter from Sonic Boom hits all the right spots. Crosby, Stills & Nash, Crosby & Nash or CSNY, it just doesn't matter as this was music that mattered in the late '60s and early '70s. After a couple of great albums; Crosby, Stills & Nash (1969) and Déju Vu (1970), CSN(Y) called it a day although the original band got back together later on in the decade. After a 1971 tour Crosby & Nash recorded their self-titled debut in 1972 followed by a performance at the Sherriff's Benefit Concert (raising awareness for prisoners) that same year. The 1972 Broadcast is the FM radio broadcast of that performance.
The disc is filled with great tracks; the stately acoustic dream that is "Wooden Sips", the wonderful acoustic guitar and harmonies of "I Used To Be King", the beautifully poignant "All Along The Lee Shore", the completely relevant "Immigration Man" and the excellent acoustic blues of "Almost Cut My Hair". When special guest Neil Young takes the stage the crowd offers a rapturous response as he delivers "Harvest", one of his most heartfelt tunes. Then it's on to "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Heart Of Gold" and "The Needle And The Damage Done", all sung to perfection by Neil.
The quality of this performance speaks volumes to all three musicians and the songs speak for themselves. On top that the recording quality is pretty good, so really, if you are a fan of these musicians this shouldn't be a hard decision to make. Buy it!
