Pol Belardi's Force: Creation/Evolution

Creation/Evolution is the new disc from Pol Belardi's Force featuring his four piece band as well as help from the Kaiser Quartett. The native of Luxembourg is a very talented musician specializing in bass and has his hands in a number of other projects such as Urban Voyage, DillenDub, MetroMara and Little Known Facts. While the artist has his roots implanted in the jazz genre these projects allow him to explore other musical avenues like electronic, dub and fusion.

With Creation/Evolution the band has created quite a diverse modern jazz record. A case in point is the upbeat "The Secret Lives Of Deep Sea Creatures" starting with gentle acoustic guitar and crisp drums and percussion before a nice rollicking piano motif and excellent sax and piano solos. The sax adds some wonderful melodies and tone. This is followed by the much more brooding "Snow" with its deliberately slow pace and moody soundscapes. The ominous sounding intro to the opening track "Prayer" creates plenty of tension while the builds of instrumentation heighten the drama. "Evolve" is a less moody construct with playful interaction between bass and drums while "Plankton" returns to a more mood laden direction highlighted by guest guitarist Riaz Khabirpour's wonderful playing.

Moody, melodic and edgy – Creation/Evolution is an album for the modern jazz fan. Highly recommended.
