Coral the Merknight vs SEARANTULA: It Weaves A Web Of Metal
Well, as a reviewer you are not going to love everything you receive and that is the case with this latest find. The band is Coral The Merknight vs SEARANTULA and the album is called It Weaves A Web Of Metal. I know, pretty weird title and band name right? Judging from the album front cover and some of the song titles like "Or Would You Prefer A Rousing Game Of Battle Boat Beer Pong? No!? Then Obviously You Have A Hankering For Block Tower Flip Cup!" the band/artist's tongue seems to be firmly planted in cheek. So, what I really mean to say I have no idea what this all means so let's just move onto the music.
The first track "Disclaimer" is an okay metal-ish tune with heavy riffs and mellower breaks. The spoken word part is ridiculously corny but I suppose good for a laugh. The next track "Videogames > Girlfriends" isn't horrible but it's not great either, especially the occasional screaming vocals. The pseudo demonic vocal intro to "500 + 500 = 1000 Miles/All This Walking Is Making Me Thirsty", a spoof metal version of The Proclaimers' hit tune is just okay but the rest of the song isn't half bad. "Tragedy" is another average metal tune with decent riffs although they do sound a bit clunky. That may have something to do with the production which can somewhat be forgiven assuming this is a self-made project. I do like the synths in the instrumental "(Oh Great, Another) Origin Story". Dolly Parton's "Scarjo(Lene)" is another metalized pop cover. I do like the female vocals here but again the riffs seem slightly disjointed. The album's low point has to be "Whip My Hair" as the vocals need some serious work. The repeating chorus is the worst culprit in this respect. The next track isn't very good either.
So what you get is a mixed bag which I suppose you knew already. Right? My only advice is simple - listen before you buy.
