Pop, Iggy & David Bowie: The Ohio Shuffle

Iggy Pop was going through some hard times after The Stooges broke up and it took his lifelong friend David Bowie to bring him out of the doldrums. Bowie got Pop back on track as he helped compose and produce Iggy's first solo album The Idiot. On the ensuing tour Bowie sat in on some shows playing keyboards and adding backing vocals. One such show was recorded as a radio broadcast from The Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, on March 21st, 1977.

The opening track "Raw Power", the title tune from The Stooges third album released in 1973 demonstrates the punk rock fervor of a rejuvenated Pop. The band's energy is palpable in this track. Then its way back to the late '60s as Pop digs out "1969", a bit more psyche and angular than the opening number. One of the album's gems has to be "Turn Blue" taken from the Lust For Life album where Bowie's backing vocals and subtle keyboard embellishments form the heart of the song. "Sister Midnight" has a bit of a Bowie feel which isn't surprising has he helped write it while "I Need Somebody" is a slow burner with shards of fiery guitar fragments and Pop's half drunken vocals. The urgent punk rock of the 1973 rocker "Search And Destroy" is another winner.

I should also mention the recording sounds very good considering the year was 1977.

On this night Pop had clearly got his mojo back as he sounds refreshed and invigorated with his raw and impassioned lead vocals leading the band with unabashed fervor. This platter is one to be treasured for all fans of Iggy Pop.
