Various Artists: The Roots Of David Bowie

Here is a new compilation of David Bowie tracks unearthed from his lesser known works. The man needs no introduction here so let us get right to it shall we?

Roots Of David Bowie is a two disc set containing different versions of classic tracks as well as some live tunes and a few other surprises. There are three interviews included which are an interesting listen where Bowie delves into his changing personas, his unique writing process and his thoughts on isolation and the arts.

The first disc contains some real nuggets. An excellent instrumental version of "Space Oddity", a rejuvenated "Heroes" and "Wild Is The Wind" featuring Stevie Ray Vaughan and a raucous version of "Look Back In Anger" with Nine Inch Nails are a few of the highlights. On the latter excellent rhythm guitar and great drumming drive the song which also includes ripping guitar, catchy backing vocals and melodic piano courtesy of Mike Garson.

Highlights on the second disc include "Sister Midnight", written with Iggy Pop where his low baritone and razor edged guitar create an atmospheric layer driven by a repeating throbbing bass line, the raw and energetic "Funtime", another Iggy collaboration and the hard rocking "Red Eyes" performed by Spiders From Mars, Bowie's backing band for The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust album. Some real ripping guitar on this one in what is just a fun solid rock tune. A slightly heavier version of the classic "Moonage Daydream" is also included before ending the disc with the Spiders From Mars tune "Prisoner", a grandiose affair with wonderful piano, acoustic guitar and orchestrations.

Roots is a bit of a hodge podge of material, thus having a disjointed feel but it is a fun listen and hey this is mostly David Bowie so you really can't go wrong.
