Spanish born saxophonist Berta Moreno earned a degree in classical clarinet before pursuing the saxophone full time. She eventually moved to The Netherlands and ultimately New York City where she released her first album Little Steps. The tenor specialist has surrounded herself with top notch players including Steve Wilson (alto and soprano sax), Troy Roberts (tenor and soprano sax), Manual Valera (piano), Maksim Perepelica (double bass) and David Hardy (drums).
Right from the get go the listener is reeled in with the catchy "J.G. Power" combining both blues and jazz in what is a stellar arrangement. Moreno's songwriting and arranging skills are truly exceptional. More great grooves can be heard in "Lost & Found" featuring outstanding ensemble playing. The beautiful ballad "Lullaby for Rafi" is punctuated with tender piano, bass and sax solos and is followed by the rousing "Mind the Gap" where a rollicking bass line and dynamic rhythms has the band in full throttle. Hints of Latin can also be disseminated from the infectious melodic groove.
Berta Moreno and her band are fabulous players and Moreno herself proves she is a first class composer and arranger as these songs should resonate highly amongst all fans of contemporary jazz.
