Peter Dominguez is an American bassist and professor with a career that has spanned four decades. He started playing bass as a teenager in his father's trio. He won the distinguished Milton J. Hinton Scholarship Competition in 1981. Hinton passed away in 2000 but the connection between Hinton still exists as Dominguez recorded his new album Groove Dreams with Hinton's 18th century Italian bass. The instrument has been played by a number of great players including Gerald Cannon, John Clayton Jr., Richard Davis, Ben Jaffe, Donovan Stokes and Ben Street just to name a few. This album is a homage to his friend and mentor.
The album features ten tracks of solo double bass with two original compositions and eight covers. The album certainly confirms just how talented Dominguez is as he plucks his way through grooves and varied tempos creating a rich tapestry of sonic textures with only one instrument. His ability to go slow or fast is something to behold.
Groove Dreams is an enjoyable ride, especially suited for aspiring players and jazz fans alike.
