Exit Eden: Rhapsodies in Black

Exit Eden are: Amanda Somerville, Clementine Develay-Thieux, Marina La Torraca and Anna Brunner. For the uninitiated, Amanda Somerville is best known for her stints with Avantasia, Trillium and Kiske Somerville, Clémentine Delauney currently fronts Visions of Atlantis, Marina La Torraca hails from Brasil and has connections with Avantasia and they are joined by Anna Brunner on a mission to, "give their own takes and interpretations on pop hits of today." It would be churlish in the extreme to point out that "Fade to Grey", "A Question Of Time", "Total Eclipse", "Heaven", and "Frozen" are not really from the here and now but there you go. Are they any good is the question?

I have to say that I very much enjoyed this album despite having to be told that say, "Impossible" is originally by James Arthur who apparently is a reality tv star, Exit Eden's version packs a real punch but then I'm a bit of a sucker for metal versions of pop tunes. The mixture of voices works really well giving a quasi-classical feel to everything. Fans of female-fronted metal will find much to enjoy on Rhapsodies in Black. Even the Backstreet Boys' "Incomplete" works well. The pick of the bunch is "Firework" (Katy Perry) which bounces along like a mental malamute. What Exit Eden appear to do best is to take weakly arranged pop songs and give them proper balls. Well worth investigating.
