Vastum: Carnal Law

This album originally appeared on vinyl in 2011 but quickly went out of print. With this remastered reissue, fans will be able to purchase the album on vinyl or get a new digital copy. I've been listening to it as a digital download and it sounds great. Vinyl collectors will likely be pleased as well.

Most fans know Vastum for their breakout 2015 album Hole Below, but early albums like this are no less punishing and intense. The band's dual vocal attack is harsh and rattling while the guitars are consistently dark and crushing. My favorite track is easily "Devoid," mostly because it has the best riffing and some excellent soloing. It also shows off the band's songwriting ability. "Devoid" has the most variety in terms of composition and performance. I also really enjoyed "Carnal Law" and "Spirit Abused."

I know it's common to listen to albums like this in light of later, more celebrated, releases. This debut album, however, should be enough to satisfy your need for death metal that is both powerful and punishing. If you've never encountered Vastum, this is a good place to start.

Track Listing:
