Godhunter: Codex Narco
This album marks a transition of sorts for Godhunter. Since their start, the band focused primarily on problems facing the world—climate change, contentious politics, and human self-destructiveness. After completing a US tour in 2015, several members left the band to focus on personal commitments, leaving remaining members David Rodgers (guitar / vocal), Andy Kratzenberg (drums), and Matthew Davis (keyboards) to discover the band's next steps. On this album, the music turns away from the world's problems to dwell on inner turmoil such as loss, depression, and addiction. Joining them at various points on the album are Eva Rose (CHRCH), Josh Thorne (Thorne), Adam Sage (Demon Lung), Clayton Bartholomew (Mountaineer, ex-Secrets of the Sky), and Nick Genitals (Methra).
The music on this album suits the band's introspective turn. The album is aggressive but it tends toward ambient elements, including noise, fuzz, sound effect, and vocals. The songwriting is dark, moody, and inconsistent. The cover of Tegan and Sara's "Walking With a Ghost" is peppy and noisy but doesn't square with the rest of the album. The best tracks included "Unarmed Combat," "Our Blood is Poison," and "Distant Fading Screams of a Dying World" but the rest was hit and miss.
