Hour of 13: Salt the Dead: The Rare and Unreleased

Collections like this are usually hit or miss. Sometimes they only appeal to die-hard fans or feature too many weird little fragments of beloved songs. Fortunately, this one is pretty solid. It includes 75 minutes of complete tracks, most of which are worth checking out. For those who don't know Hour of 13, the band has been around for about 10 years and plays a very straightforward blend of doom metal and heavy metal. The music features heavy riffs, melodic guitar solos, clean vocals, and wicked lyrics. You get the idea. The band experienced many ups and downs, some of which threatened to end the band but this release suggests a clean start. Let's hope so.

On this release, fans will hear several alternate versions of popular songs, including a couple of different vocal takes on "Call to Satan." Those are all good, but my favorite track was easily "The Rites of Samhain." This version includes the correct vocal placements and has the band's main founding member, Chad Davis, on vocals. I also really liked "Allowance of Sin" and "Upon Black Wings We Die."

If you've never heard Hour of 13, they're worth discovering. If you like what you hear, I suggest checking out some of their other recordings. It's solid doom metal.
