Ditch and the Delta, The: Hives in Decline

Since I live in the Salt Lake City area, The Ditch and the Delta is a technically a local band for me. Unfortunately, I haven't caught them in concert, but I'm hoping to change that as soon as possible, especially if their live show is as good as this album. The band has three members, Elliot Secrist (guitar / vocals), Charles Bogus (drums), and Kory Quist (bass / vocals). Like other trios, the band sounds big and bold. The music is fascinating, challenging, and powerful while maintaining a sludgy / doom quality that should appeal to most metal fans. Unlike some other math metal bands, The Ditch and the Delta understand the importance of connecting with listeners. In their short career, the band has already shared the stage with Call of the Void, Lord Dying, The Sword, Lowloon Walled City, the Atlas Moth, and others.

The music on this album is basically an experimental blend of sludge, doom, and math metal. Listeners will also hear moments of noise and progressive metal throughout the album. The best thing about this album for me is that the experimentation fits naturally within the band's overall sludginess. I'm open to musical innovation but I also want to know how it will expand familiar metal styles. I thought the album was powerful and I look forward to hearing more from The Ditch and the Delta. Check out "Sleeping Dogs" and "Till Body Quits" but don't stop there. There's plenty to enjoy here.
