Bühlmann, Roland: Bailenas

Roland Bühlmann is truly an impressive guitarist. The Switzerland musician has two CDs to his credit; Aineo (2015) and his sophomore effort Bailenas (2017). I was very much impressed with Aineo and Bailenas follows much along those same lines, progressive fusion at its finest.

As I noted in my review of Aineo, not only is Bühlmann a fabulous player he also knows a thing or two about the use of modern technology. His new album is wonderfully recorded and his attention to subtle detail is noteworthy. There is a beautiful flow to this album but there is also a lot happening amongst the layers of sound, as his guitar weaves its way amongst ethereal and atmospheric soundscapes imaginatively created and flawlessly executed. Just listen to the title track and hear the magic for yourself. The tune starts with a melancholic mood leading into a beautiful guitar solo, sometimes ethereal but also including some clean almost shredding-like fretwork. He certainly plays with that indescribable 'feel' that the best guitarists possess. "Cinnamon" is heavier with the guitar having more of an edge but there are also some fine acoustic strums which only adds to the song's diverse sound. Distorted riffs and cleaner tones will have fans of the guitar frothing at the mouth. More delicate acoustics and knife edged riffs can be heard in the excellent fusion of "Rougeoyer" while the trippy soundscapes in "Zammeru" are quite intriguing. The disc ends with the eighteen minute "Pange Chorda", an extremely mellow slice of ambient moodiness topped with nice acoustic guitar and serene effects. The final few minutes are a little edgier with the increasing tempo and buildup of guitar sounds.

Bottom line; for those who enjoy mood in their fusion soundscapes you can't go wrong with Bailenas. A true work of art.
