McGregor, Isamu: Resonance
Isamu McGregor is an American jazz musician with two albums to his credit; Live at the Baked Potato! (2012) and Resonance (2017). Before listening to Resonance I was completely unfamiliar with the pianist. In the liner notes he refers his music as creative jazz and that seems like a fair assessment. He also gives credit to his band which includes:
Evan Marien (bass)
Gene Coye (drums)
Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet on track 5)
Seamus Lake (tenor sax on track 2)
Deen Anbar (guitar on track 6)
Resonance is a very enjoyable disc that covers a range of styles all exceptionally crafted under the umbrella of jazz. Take the first track "The Dreamer" as a prime example. Fusion, funk and jazz are exceptionally blended together without sounding overdone or pretentious. The piano begins softly as it drifts along slowly played with a great deal of finesse. The rhythm section slowly builds into a funky groove before electric piano and other keyboard sounds takes on a fusion bent. The second track "Relentless" is another excellent tune, a slice of modern jazz with a catchy repeating piano motif and highlighted with Blake's diverse sax work. "Thor vs James Brown" is another highlight with its almost smooth fusion hinting of Steely Dan and punctuated with the guitar of Dean Anbar.
The disc ends on a very strong note with the complex "The Tao Of Flying". Gentle guitar and piano mark the beginning before blistering keyboards, bass and drums showcase some great playing from all members of the band. Again, melodic fusion and some funky keyboard lines are touched upon.
Resonance should be a real treat for all fans of jazz and fusion. Highly recommended!
