Schläppi, Daniel/Marc Copland: More Essentials

I have been familiar with American composer/pianist Marc Copland for a while now, especially his most recent discography with Zenith (2016) and Better By Far (2017). Not one for taking a lot of time off the pianist is back with another release, this time as a duo featuring bassist Daniel Schläppi. The new album titled More Essentials is the follow up to Essentials released in 2012.

The disc contains fourteen tracks including the five "Essential" improvised bass pieces. These tracks serve to break up the more traditional compositions, a mixture of classic standards and originals. If anything, Schläppi proves to be an excellent bassist.

The Miles Davis classic "Blue In Green" is the first proper track. The tandem play beautifully together in what is a heavy nod to nostalgia. The Copland penned "LST" is a bit more upbeat as each musician plays off one another in subtle displays of virtuosity. "Estate", originally written by Italian pianist Bruno Martino, takes turns with each instrument including sparsely played notes while the other graces the song with subtle solo spots. "Essential 10" includes more fragmented bass and piano motifs in a completely improvised fashion.

There are more highlights including a nice cover of Joni Mitchell's "Rainy Night House".

More Essentials is another fine eclectic jazz album from two of the finest musicians in the genre. Recommended.
