Born in New York City, Robert Miller took up piano at age 7 followed by the trumpet. When the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 Miller deemed the trumpet 'uncool' and decided to take up the guitar. From there it was on to bass where his bands dominated the Boston jazz scene for many years. He formed Project Grand Slam in 2008 and their debut album Play is an excellent jazz fusion release that you can find reviewed on this site. The new album is titled The PGS Experience.
The band members are:
Robert Miller (electric bass)
Mario Castro (saxophone)
Marcello Casagrandi (keyboards)
Joel E. Mateo (drums)
Tristan Clark (guitar)
Flavio Silva (guitar)
Guillermo Barron Rios (percussion)
Ziarra Washington (singer)
Mindi Abair (saxophone)
As with all the music I have heard from this project the fusion absolutely cooks with great solos and stellar all around musicianship. The players are completely in sync with each other starting with the rhythmic pocket grooves from Mateo and Miller.
The disc opens with "Metro Shuffle" featuring blistering guitar and sax where the searing notes in the upper register really get the juices flowing. Tasty guitar and floating keyboards highlight the cover of Phish's "Free" and the reimagining of Cream's "I'm So Glad" with excellent lead vocals from Ziarra Washington, bursts of saxophone and more searing lead guitar is another stand out track.
Four live tracks end the disc including Hendrix's "Fire" and The Kinks' "You Really Got Me". The latter is particularly interesting with its heavy psyche guitar and jazz vocals. I would love to see the band in concert as they really bring it live.
The PGS Experience is another excellent effort from Robert Miller and his band. Fans of jazz, fusion and rock should all find something to sink their teeth into. Excellent stuff.
