Angelwings: The Edge of Innocence

Gibraltar's Angelwings began life back in 2013 as a Nightwish covers band before developing their own songs and taking flight as a band in their own right. As you might expect debut album The Edge of Innocence owes much to the Finnish symphonic rockers but also does enough to suggest that Angelwings have the necessary songwriting talents to enjoy a career and a build a fan base of their own.

Musically we are very much in the well-worn territory of not only Nightwish but also Epica, Edenbridge, Within Temptation ad infinitum. This aside there is definitely a spark about the vocals of Davinia Cano and the band flex their combined musical muscle to make for some memorable moments such as the haunting 'Lilith', the mellow and emotional 'Memories' and the bluff and bluster of the closing Arthurian inspired 'The Legend & The Myth' which is highlighted by some impressive vocal harmonies. Overall this a well-rounded and executed debut album and even in such an overcrowded genre there is always room for a band with the capabilities of Angelwings so all credit to them for breaking out from being merely a tribute act and making their own history.
