Five Horse Johnson: Jake Leg Boogie

Toledo back door blues rockers Five Door Johnson return with the magnificent Jake Leg Boogie, album number eight and first since 2013's The Taking of Black Heart. More than two decades since their debut the band retain their love of fusing together blues, hard rock and stoner topped off with a little bit of whiskey soaked swagger. And with the tried and tested formula very much established, FDJ are a band that serves up exactly what their fans have come to expect in typical no nonsense style.

Anchored by the war torn vocals of Eric Oblander and heavy grooves supplied by Brad Coffin and Phil Durr, the blues harp enriched title track kicks things of, a burst of swamp infused hard rock that takes no prisoners. 'Magic Man' comes swiftly along behind it and the funky guitar work out and tribal beat soon has the listener fully engaged. Much of what follows is a full force electric blowout although they occasionally lull you into a false sense of security by dropping the tempo ever so slightly for 'Daddy Was A Gun' and the closing 'Last Song' is the nearest thing on the album to a ballad but for the most part this is exuberant riffs, gutsy vocals and blues rock par excellence.

With Five Door Johnson having a devoted fan base on both sides of the Atlantic, Jake Leg Boogie is sure to be warmly received and no doubt the band will soon be back on the road and offering up some scintillating live performances.
