Valor: Arrogance: The Fall

Epic heaviness is back in style with Valor's powerful entry into the melodic power metal market. Arrogance: The Fall is a stealthy concept album that doesn't publicly utter such lofty pronouncements but winds up landing there nevertheless. And we should be blessed for it because the song lyrics and musical progressions make a sequential logic none can escape. There is rigorous artistic thought in this album and I applaud the lead guitarist whom plays in such an original manner as to elude most easily labeled influences.

After an opening instrumental track "Uprising" that repeatedly sounds like the vocalist is going to jump in and kickstart this album, the second track "Arrogant Fall" sets the majestic mood with a tale of warrior cunning gone wayside due to diseased arrogance. "Flying Away" is speedy but chipper set of Helloween-influenced vocals to create a masterful melodic flight of fancy.

"In the Name of Valor" is a hypnotic number alternating between progressive metal and power chords punching through a lead singer whom is not there to run around the stage but belt out blasts of fantasy storyline. And leads into "The Crown of Evermore" a poetic musical composition that includes a stupefying solo of grand proportions. Valor again goes to exalted places where other bands fail to follow through: a perfect ending to a most satisfying album. The last track "No Angel's Face" is indeed such a rarity in that it somehow melds all the highlights of the album both musically and lyrically and ties them together with an extra dose of diamond-hard diligence. Valor lives up its noble name.
