Gravetemple: Impassable Fears

Noisy, dissonant, caustic, and somewhat violent...these are just a few ways to describe the latest release Impassable Fears from experimental & avant-garde black metal act Gravetemple. a project that includes Mayhem vocalist Attila Csihar, Sunn0))) member Stephen O'Malley, and sometime Sunn0))) multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi. Not surprising that this trio now finds themselves on the always eclectic Svart Records label, home to all sorts of music that's off the beaten path, and we can certainly call Gravetemple 'off the beaten path'. Impassable Fears is most definitely not for the faint of heart, a six track affair of ominous & often times terrifying sounds, Attila spewing, mumbling, and chanting (if you are hoping to understand a word of it, forget it) over waves of feedback, bass & guitar drones, sound effects, and other assorted noises, blips, and bleeps. Easily more disturbing than Sunn0))), though less manic than Mayhem, Gravetemple can certainly qualify as the soundtrack to your worst nightmare or elevator music for those in an insane asylum, though I'm not sure how many people would actually want to sign up for either one. Can't say that there's anything here remotely enjoyable, though the crushing bass grooves and Attila's maniacal warbling on "Elavult Foldboylgo (World Out of Date)" is kind of intriguing at times, but loses its ghastly charm about 5 minutes in.

Proceed with caution.
