Evolving out of the belly-dance/metal/world-music group (yes, you read that right) Arcane Dimension, the similarly monikered Arcane Ritual consists of the duo Jarek Tatarek (credited with 'music') and Teresa Camp ('voice'). Together the pair have recorded the three track, 16 minute EP Enemy Of The State and dared to be at least slightly different. Combining a thrash attack to something more akin to symphonic metal, the twosome have carved out a reasonably individual niche. While it would be hard to describe much of what goes on during the slow Middle Eastern thunder of "Entwined In Starlight" or doom tinged "What Lies Within", as remarkably ground breaking, neither are they simply content to ape - even if there is a strong Sabbath flavour to the latter. It's the title track that gives the strongest suggestion that Arcane Ritual might have the character and desire to stand out, a strong thrash ethos delivered with strangely punky-polite vocals and frantically in control guitars. Add in the drama that layers of keyboards provide and a strong percussion pummel and the results prove memorable.
In fairness, three songs maybe isn't quite sufficient to get a strong enough flavour of Arcane Ritual to truly go one way or the other on them, their desire to show different sides to what they do possibly lessening the impact of this short blast. Hopefully they can build on the more bullish smack of this EPs title track to infuse a debut album with some truly impactful fare.
