Macy Blackman & the Mighty Fines: Shoorah Shoorah

New Orleans R&B songwriting legend Allen Toussaint and Irma Thomas, known as the "Soul Queen of New Orleans" began working together in the early '60s and created some well-known classics.

Macy Blackman has played with many musicians through the years and he himself is also an excellent musician. His singing partner Nancy Wright has a voice similar in style to Etta James so you know right there she has plenty of soul. The band is called Macy Blackman and the Mighty Fines and the album is titled Shoorah Shoorah.

A cover of the classic "Working In The Coalmine" begins the proceedings in a delightful way. Big bass and sax and rollicking piano serve the tune well. The baritone sax is so rich and deep and the piano solo is melodic and well composed. The catchiness of the original version is kept intact. "In Between Tears" is another infectious R&B tune as is the soulful and upbeat title track. Fantastic interplay between tenor and baritone sax is an album highlight. The nostalgic "Lipstick Traces" will create a flood of memories for many people, those interested in a bygone era. I cannot say enough about the vocals of Blackman and Wright. They are both so soulful and just a joy to listen to. Shoorah Shoorah is quite simply an excellent R&B/jazz disc that should create brand new memories for fans of these timeless tracks. Released on MamaRu Records.
