Toto: Japan 1982

You've gotta love the power ballad and no other band did it better than Toto. Of course that is not all the band was known for. At the height of their popularity in the early '80s they were at the top of their game. This group of session musicians could/can play with the best of them but they also wrote some great songs over the course of their career. This two disc set titled Japan 1982, taken from an FM radio broadcast has the band sounding great with youthful vim and vigor that really comes across in a live setting.

This tour was hot on the heels of their fourth release aptly titled IV, which many considered to be their best album. It shouldn't be surprising the band played a total of six tracks from that album including the massive hits "Rosanna" and "Africa", two pop gems that sound great here. "Africa" plays almost sixteen minutes, pure bliss for fans of the studio version. The verse vocals sound slightly flat but all is forgiven during the soaring choruses and great use of keys and percussion. The melodicism is hard to deny in the rocker "I'll Supply The Love", the addictive pop of "99", the jazz inflected "Georgy Porgy" with its spry piano and heady sax solo and the opening rocker "Girl Goodbye" where swells of keys and Lukather's speedy runs come to the surface. The band's progressive side also shows up in tracks like the ultra-tight instrumental "Child's Anthem" where keys and guitar are on full display.

Japan 1982 is an excellent live disc brought to you from the folks at Zip City. For fans of the band this should provide plenty of summer time listening fun.
