Zero Times Everything: Sonic Cinema

The beginnings of Zero Times Everything, an avant-garde band based out of New York City dates back to Robert Fripp's Guitar Craft Seminars at Claymont Court where the three musicians first met. After their debut album Dutch Schultz was released they played the New York Festival of Light in 2013 as well as the Filmmaker's Coop Benefit featuring Laurie Anderson, John Zorn and Philip Glass.

Their sophomore effort is titled Sonic Cinema and one thing is for sure, their music is not derivative.

Ok, what else about the band's music? Well, first of all this is not an easy band to describe. The music hits on avant-garde, ambient, electronica and even a bit of progressive. They have their own unique style which is saying something in this day and age. At first I wasn't sure of what to make of this album but the more I listened the more it started to come together. Muted grinding fuzz laden guitars and electronica elements drift through the sometimes dense soundscape, loaded with effects, synths and field recordings. At times the music is downright scary as in the creepy sounding "Accident" and its unsettling voice repeating "there's been an accident here" and the equally disquieting "Kapital" with a beginning that would make a great horror film soundtrack. Quickly the weird sound effects give way to washes of synths and a full on electronica sound. Some pretty cool guitars, breathing effects and almost bombastic like orchestrations give this one a few proggy undertones as well.

For something a little different that is quite mood intensive with ambient electronica soundscapes, Sonic Cinema is an album you can reach for again and again and hear something a little different each time. Recommended.
