Deathblow: Demolition Deployment

It's doubtful that the latest EP from US thrashers Deathblow will gain a release on vinyl, which considering the effort that's gone into making sure that the Demolition Deployment CD is as eye catching as possible, is a bit of a shame. Cracking artwork and classy logo aside, the four dudes on the back cover Paulie, Danzer, Holger and Smeltron have a thrash fixation. They also like a slab of death stylings and while they could do with a stylist, or at least to learn to look less earnest in their photo-shoots, they know their way around a gargantuan riff.

The look and ethos of the band may scream retro and in truth their full velocity fuelled riffs don't alter that mindset and yet, the two originals in this brief three track effort find a band that are more than capable of achieving what they've set out to. Both the title track and "Implement Of Destruction" do an excellent job of mixing breakneck riffage and thunderous drums to some excellent mid-paced attention shifters. Factor in vocals that bite, snarl, growl and roar and the whole package comes together with real vim and vigour. With a faithful, but not overly so, take on Motorhead's "Mean Machine" also giving strong hints of the impetus behind this four-piece, there's no denying it all makes a mean and meaty impression.

With production values that clatter and pop in an intentionally retro-cheap and cheerful manner, Deathblow are truly celebrating the sounds and times that have inspired them. That they do so in such a convincing style is what makes them worth spending time with. Short, sweet, savage and surprisingly succulent, Deathblow are a band capable of landing a killer punch.
