Chubb, Ted: Gratified Never Satisfied

Ted Chubb is an American jazz musician/composer with three solo albums to his credit. He released his first solo album New Tricks in 2009 followed by Alternate Side in 2011. His new disc Gratified Never Satisfied comes out in late June. Chubb specializes in trumpet so it shouldn't be surprising there are some outstanding trumpet sounds all over this disc. Of course as with any band effort there are other players involved namely Bruce Williams (alto saxophone on tracks 1,2,4,6 and 7), Seth Johnson (guitar), Oscar Perez (piano, Fender Rhodes), Tom DiCarlo (bass) and Jerome Jennings (drums).

What you get is another professional take on contemporary jazz with excellent musicianship, nice grooves and fine melodies. It is both complex and free flowing where all the musicians get in on the action. The title track starts the album off and is a spry little piece of modern jazz with a great beat and a fine drum performance from Jennings. Add in some lovely trumpet, sax and guitar solos and the album is off to an excellent start. "Space" is a ten plus minute tune with fantastic sax and trumpet. The Fender Rhodes piano solo is another album highlight. Tasty guitar highlights the catchy "East of the Sun" along with dreamy Fender Rhodes and a trumpet melody that is as modern as it is nostalgic. The joyous "Little Sid" is another vibrant offering as the trumpet and sax continue to shine.

There have been many quality jazz releases this year and Gratified Never Satisfied certainly qualifies in that regard. Simply outstanding!
