Empire's 2003 release Trading Souls (now reissued by Pride & Joy Music) is quite the retro accomplishment with an updated Joe Lynn Turner vocal sound reminiscent of Rainbow aggressively weaving in and out of the first three tracks, "One in a Million," "Pay Back Time "and "Teenage Deadhead." The fourth, fifth and sixth track "Big World, Little Man," "You" and "Perfect Singularity" open Scorpion style and completely convinces me of this band's depth. The seventh track "Wherever You Go" is the right departure from the influences that move this band in diverse musical places. This is where you hear Empire as Empire and they have a deep bench of talent to draw from and quite frankly I would like to listen to more of these tracks. Joyfully, the next track continues in that direction with an excellent ballad "Did You Ever Love Me." And well as "Comin Home" and "Back in the Light" which demonstrate the band firmly growing into their signature set. As it is Empire has serious connections with the past and performs with flare and flash. But its heart and future belong to the second half of this album where their unique brand of hard rock makes me want to stick around for years to come.
