Katre: Encounters

My central enthusiasm for Greek composer Vangelis has always been he has a musical plan that once you latch upon early in the project the rest of the album flows to a place you were meant to be. Katre, a Turkish group, whom are billed as "post-rock" symphonic style mixed with eastern flavor, do not adhere to a tonal template to keep the attention of their audience.

Encounters is thematically structured in halves, the first half is about Existence and the second half zeroes in on Existing. The album is unique in that it appears to be conceptual but musically disobeys what a western perspective might have in such an arrangement. I agree with the opinion that Katre allows an organic oriental atmosphere to be present without overwhelming the individual pieces with cliched unions of east and west.

The first track "Underwater World" is a magnificent introduction which permits the listener a digital front seat to group players expounding their enormous gifts through a sonic kaleidoscope of ever changing melodies and eastern influences. The first four tracks signifying {Existence} smartly capture the macro viewpoint of what Encounters is attempting to convey. The bigger universe beyond the heavens is a grand machine and we as humans frequently feel like infants inside of it.

The last four tracks beginning with the jubilant "Bond" frame the next half of the album called {Existing} which seems to focus on the micro or inner life of the individual. There is less rhythmic rhetoric in these tracks as the group internalizes its set to develop intimacy and self-reflection. An experimental exploration is a fair manner to view this album as it has no true category or polysonic peer. It stands alone as a harmonic epistle to world busy listening to the call of the wild instead of the bells that beckon our better angels.
