Lee, Hyunil: Living Water

Born in 1975, South Korean musician Hyunil (Neil) Lee started playing guitar at the age of sixteen. After attending the Berklee College of Music he has played in many venues throughout the US and in 2016 released his first album Living Water. On the disc Lee is joined by Quamon Fowler (tenor saxophone), ShaLeia Latrice James (vocals on "Secret Place"), Young Heo (bass), Colin Campbell (piano) and Terence Hobdy (drums).

I know you might be getting tired of me writing this but with Living Waters we have another fantastic jazz album in our midst. The players exude professionalism and class and offer plenty of tasteful jazz throughout the album's nine tracks. The first two tracks "Walking in the Garden" and "Fortitude" are upbeat romps featuring great melodies and outstanding solos. On the bopping "Fortitude" the guitar, sax, piano and bass solos are splendid and are worked into the song in a seamless manner. On the pretty title track the mood is more reserved and laid back with gentle guitar lines and languid piano and sax. The pace does pick up as another melodic sax solo takes center stage. Another crystal clean guitar solo highlights the swinging "Faithful" with piano and sax solos added for good measure. The only track to feature vocals is the second version of "Secret Place", a melodic jazz ballad featuring James' crystal clean tone. The accompanying sax solo is another wonderful example of jazzy melodicism soaring with the vocals creating new undiscovered heights.

While Living Water isn't the most original jazz album you will ever hear, the melodies are so ear catching and the musicianship so excellent it won't matter one iota. For more information and samples check out Lee's website at the link below.
