Waldorff, Torben: Holiday on Fire

Torben Waldorff is a Danish jazz guitarist now residing in Malmö, Sweden. He has been with the crowd funding label ArtistShare for ten years and during that time has released a number of discs with his latest being Holiday on Fire. Here he features longtime band members Ingrid Jensen (trumpet) and Maggi Olin (piano, Rhodes) and the new rhythm section of Drew Gress (bass) and Johnathan Blake (drums).

According to the press release Waldorff was initially influenced by American blues and rock and roll and with his new release the music certainly takes a more forceful approach to modern jazz. The disc features seven exploratory tracks with each musician being a critical cog in the wheel in what is some fantastic ensemble playing. The trumpet/piano duet "Thyst Intro" begins the disc with lonely trumpet notes amidst faint background piano. The playing is very sparse and introspective and leads to "Thyst" which has the full ensemble exploring modern jazz with complex drumming laying the foundation for the rest of the instrumentalists to shine. The approach takes elements of free form yet with melodic moments as well with Waldorff's lyrical string bending being a major highlight. Angular guitar lines and breezy trumpet are featured on the intriguing "Combust" and more improvisation can be found on the laid back yet experimental "Our Sound of Love (and Charles's, and Duke's)". Waldorff makes his presence felt on "Off to Far" with his crystal clear tone at times taking on a grittier edge and featuring one of his best solos on the disc. Great groove here as well.

Waldorff has presented listeners of modern jazz and fusion an album filled with grooves and fantastic musicianship. Of course his dynamic guitar playing can be heard throughout which makes this a winner through and through.
