PH: Eternal Hayden

This album, the band's fourth, looks backwards, forwards, and upwards. It's also about what one discovers when everything else gets left behind. Like cleaning out an old closet, the band hoped to start by letting things go and discovering new uses for old spaces. They also wanted to discover what else they could do. For many years, the band's visionary quality appealed to fans who wanted music that walked just outside of conventional, well-trodden, roads. This album should appeal to some of those fans. However, the band's dreamlike, surreal, and psychedelic qualities are sometimes tedious, repetitive, and boring.

I called the band PH above, but that isn't quite right. Formerly known as Mr. Peter Hayden, the band now goes by a graphical representation of the letters P and H as depicted on the cover art. Even though this shift from name to graphic will draw far less attention than Prince's similar attempt several years ago, PH will likely have some explaining to do if only to help convince skeptical fans of their reasons. I admire the band's vision here; it is partly spiritual, partly musical, and partly philosophical. And yet, the music's searching qualities never quite hit home. Tracks like "We Fly High" spend too much time getting ready for takeoff than they do in the sky.
