Choirs of Veritas: I Am the Way the Truth and the Life

The concept album in the Christian metal music encyclopedia is rarer than a herd of albino zebras. Artistically, for this metal subgroup the concept notion is practically rendered moot because the subgroup itself is a major concept called Christianity. And that can be both a strength and a weakness if you examined the past thirty years of Christian metal albums. The critical unresolved issue was mainly about dozens of releases top heavy on messianic message and light on mosh pit music or even something approaching musical innovation. Elevator music had more original intentions.

Fortunately, time, technology and a ton of talent permit Choirs of Veritas (Veritas means Truth in Latin) to turn clichéd corners and emerge ready to rock the world with progressive metal symphonic compositions carrying modern hymns of hope. The title track "I Am the Way the Truth and the Life" is a complex classical tour de force of soaring keyboards, searing guitar licks, barrel-lunged lead vocals and the elegant background vocals of mezzosoprano Eliana Sanna. "The Passion and the Cross" is another heavenly harmonic hit that rises above any stereotypes of progressive bands that choose to speak about angels instead of annihilation.

Songs that attempt to recruit listeners while rocking them are not controversial in an age where folks murder people for social media viewership and rogue nations threaten the planet with radioactive holocaust. At least this group of players is out in the open with metal epistles meant to motivate the blind to see what was once invisible. And inspire the disenfranchised to hear young musicians talking about a higher power. The final track "Grace" outlines the special moment when a person looks outside of themselves to find the meaning of life. If grace does exist in this universe it is not part of the cosmic equation but rather contained in the selfless act of an ancient hero.
