Lux Perpetua: Curse of the Iron King

Lux Perpetua is a Polish speed metal band whom manages to meld early Helloween with heavy overtones of Savatage as evident in the title track "The Curse of the Iron King." The fine guitar work coupled with superior production values should raise the excitement of fans itching for semi-conceptual songs of medieval mayhem and manhood. The fourth track "Army of Salvation" opens with a stellar narration and then moves to a catchy speed metal anthem (think Armored Saint) strong enough to rock a stadium but bouncy enough to play on a metal radio station.

"Riders of the Dead" harkens back to the days when certain tunes just sounded more enjoyable on headphones rather than scattered throughout the garage. The vocalist, Artur, is most compelling in this sly mix of studio effects, driving drums and rhythmic guitar phrasing. One of the last tracks of this powerful and pleasing album is "Desert of Destiny" a true stand-out among the utterly entertaining and artistically consistent tracks. I can't tell if they saved it for last on purpose or if when composing this collection made an evolutionary leap in their song writing abilities. It's a good omen for a possible direction in their next offering. Lux Perpetua is a talented and committed metal band starting to find their special place in the world. Their presence on the scene is a healthy reminder: the future of metal is not in jeopardy.
