Eagles, The: Live at the Summit, Houston, 1976
The Eagles. What else really needs to be said. Their body of work speaks for itself. I have always loved the band and have recently been reacquiring myself with their early classic material from their first self-titled effort to the mid '70s iconic release Hotel California. Perhaps it has been the recently tragic passing of Glen Frey that has led me to this rediscovery of sorts or maybe it's out of pure nostalgia. Whatever the case there is no denying this band wrote some great tunes which can be further explored on this live release taken from a Houston concert in 1976. This period of the band saw a major change; the replacement of Bernie Leadon with Joe Walsh, a few years after his stint with James Gang.
The tour in 1976 supported the recently released Hotel California album although only two tracks appear from the record; "Hotel California" and the incredibly poignant "Wasted Time". We all know the former is one of the quintessential classics from the '70s and it's nice to hear it performed when the band was in their prime. "Wasted Time" is one of the band's more moving moments and this rendition is very nice indeed as Henley nails his vocals. Other highlights include the sublime vocal harmonies of "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It To The Limit", the feel good summer vibes of "Already Gone" where the guitar is a bit more punchier, the rocking Walsh classic "Rocky Mountain Way" and the James Gang go to song "Funk #49". There are many other great tracks to be found, almost two hours of great music.
You may be wondering about the sound quality. It's not perfect by any means but considering the era it's not bad at all and just hearing these great tracks performed live is a real treat.
Moments such as these need to be savoured, after all they will never come again. Highly recommended!
*RIP Mr. Glenn Frey. You are greatly missed.*
