Wingfield/Reuter/Stavi/Sirkis: The Stone House

Here is a fabulous improvised fusion album titled The Stone House from four very impressive musicians. UK guitarist Mark Wingfield (who has worked with acoustic guitarist Kevin Kastning) is joined by German touch guitarist Markus Reuter (Stick Men, The Crimson ProjeKct, Centrozoon), Israeli borne bassist Yaron Stavi (David Gilmour, Phil Manzanera, Robert Wyatt, Richard Galliano) and drummer Asaf Sirkis (Tim Garland, Mark Wingfield, Nicolas Meier).

The album is completely improvised built around Wingfield's and Reuter's atmospheric guitar textures. The guitar work often hints of psychedelic and spaced out trippiness. Other worldly would be another apt description. The band creates layers of texture that begs for repeated listening, backed by some solid bass and drum grooves. This is a diverse album touching on jazz, progressive, fusion and psychedelic while remaining completely cohesive. All six tunes sit well together and make for an imaginative and creative listening experience.

The first track "Rush" begins with a mellow and dreamy soundscape augmented with angular guitar phrasings and squelching guitar tones. It's a moody track and very dynamic as well especially the wild rhythmic changes and sudden bursts of guitar driven chaos. More incredible tripped out guitar improvisation can be found in the entrancing "Four Moons" as well as the angular fusion of "Silver" featuring some cool guitar pyrotechnics.

The Stone House is an excellent listen and needs your full attention to fully grasp. Background music this is not. If there is such a thing as headphone music this is it. Recommended.
