Here's a tasty little treat from the trio known as Organissimo, titled B3tles-A Soulful Tribute to the Fav Four. Comprised of Jim Alfredson (organ), Larry Barris (guitar), and Randy Marsh (drums), Organissimo have been around since 2000, releasing a handful of studio albums and performing many live dates around the US, their instrumental brand of Hammond B3 dominated music drawing from jazz, rock, funk, blues, and soul. Here they have picked out a dozen Beatles classics and given them their own unique spin, and it's a fascinating listen from start to finish. Alfredson's sultry Hammond is front and center throughout, but Barris also gets plenty of time in the spotlight, the two adding a Latin flair to "And I Love Her" as well as injecting plenty of jazzy goodness into the legendary "Taxman". The majestic Hammond takes over the role of vocals on a spirited take on "Can't Buy Me Love", a tune with a silky guitar solo courtesy of Barris, and "Dear Prudence" is given royal treatment, Marsh's gentle drumming gliding underneath Barris' speedy licks and Alfredson's lush Hammond. For "Come Together" the trio injects a bit of blues rock into their sound, and the weaving lead organ & guitar excursions on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" are as emotional as they are classy.
Overall, Organissimo have done a splendid job here giving an entirely new approach to these old Beatles staples, making it one of the more unique covers albums I've heard in years. Whether you are a fan of the Fab Four or just a lover of jazz, this one's easy to recommend.
