Though they hail from Australia, thrash act Harlott could easily be mistaken for a metal group from the Bay Area with their latest album of neck snapping goodness, titled Extinction. With a list of influences that include Slayer, Kreator, Overkill, Testament, and Guillotine as primary examples, it's Exodus that appears to be the obvious choice, thanks to guitarist/vocalist Andrew Hudson, who sounds eerily similar to Steve 'Zetro' Souza from the Bay Area legends, as well as their breakneck and violent attack. Drummer Tim Joyce is firing like a man possessed on the rampaging "First World Solutions", and lead guitarist Ryan Butler proves to be a fluid yet flashy player on thrashy gems "Whore", "No Past", "Conflict Revelation", and the potent title track. Good to see the band dive into some epic arrangements, as on the lengthy crusher "And Darkness Brings the Light", and the complex riffery of "Parasite" will give any of the major thrash players a run for their money.
Though 12 songs makes for a hefty platter, a few are rather short, making Extinction a quick, rewarding ride of vintage sounding thrash by a modern band that's paying homage to some of the greats. Well done.
