Noro, Nick: Vietnamm

The man behind the band Survival keeps up his unrelenting workload with a short (and at eleven minutes, I do mean short) solo EP, Vietnamm. With the five tracks – one of which is a spoken word piece – engineered and mastered by Zack Ohren (Fallujah, Chelsea Grin, Gypsyhawk), the sound is sharp without ever being sterile, cleverly allowing its piercing attack to take hold. As ever, Noro isn't just writing songs for the sake of it, "10 Minutes" opening proceedings by recounting a shooting from the perspective of the person who had been shot, before the sleazy punk pop of "In Love" whines and prods with real intent.

However "Life Of Crime", with its almost glam-rock-metal-electro riff and snarled vocals adds an unexpected slap of vibrancy. The more melodically inclined "Daywalker" going as far as to evoke Slash era Guns n' Roses through its stabbing guitars and powering drums (also provided by Ohren). While a keyboard backing melody lines reveals an adventurous motif that continues after the song has run its course. Leaving "Yugen" to close out this all too brief outburst in equally fine, if slightly unhinged, form.

I'd be a liar if I suggested that I've always connected with the manner in which Nick Noro has previously tried to get his socially conscious messages across. For those who have, this little release might actually come as something of a shock, but for anyone looking for a more obvious way in to the man's thoughts, this should prove an excellent place to begin.
