King, Natalia M: Bluezzin T'll Dawn
Natalia M. King is a Brooklyn born musician who developed her muse in France where she released her first album Milagro (2000) followed by Furyandsound (2003) and Flesh is Speaking (2005). After a long hiatus she is back with her new disc Bluezzin T'll Dawn.
Her new album focuses on jazzy blues cut from the same cloth as those classic standards we all know and love. Artists like Billy Holiday and Nina Simone are good reference points. King (electric and acoustic guitar, vocals) is backed by an excellent band including Anders Ulrich (double bass), Anthony Honnet (piano), Davy Honnet (drums), Ronald Baker (trumpet) and Xavier Sibre (tenor and alto sax, clarinet, flute).
From the title it should come as no surprise what's on offer here. Bluesy jazz music with a sultry soulful touch is what this platter is all about. These songs are laced with wonderful piano and sax like in the album opening "Traces In The Sand", a moody ballad with a sultry touch or the excellent version of Billy Holiday's "Don't Explain" with its soulful bass intro and groove becoming more urgent culminating with a wonderful sax solo. The bluesy "Insatiable" channels Billy Holiday, both vocally and musically while "This Time Around" is standard worthy with its gentle piano and sax intro before the playing gets pretty hot, especially the smoking sax solo. "Love You Madly" is another excellent tune with standout piano, sax and vocals.
If you appreciate old school jazz and blues King's latest should do the trick. I hope you like it as much as I do.
