All Hell: The Grave Alchemist

I'm always interested in recordings mixed and mastered by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust). I've enjoyed Grind's various projects for years and his talents in the studio are more and more evident. He brings a warm and crusty sound to projects like this. There's also a strong punk rock vibe on this recording that is worthy of a band like Toxic Holocaust.

Even though I'm praising Joel Grind here, I have plenty of good things to say about All Hell. The band has a solid reputation for writing songs that blend the band's punk roots with a nice blend of crust and thrash metal. If that sounds familiar, don't let it fool you. All Hell has a style all its own and they play music that somehow manages to be heavy, playful, and catchy. It's crust that boogies. I'm serious. Check out "Memory Tomb" and you'll hear it, too. For this album, the band developed a concept that tells a story blending alchemy, occultism, necromancy, and vampirism. I didn't follow the lyrics all that closely but what I understood worked well enough. I was especially drawn to "The Madness Out of Time" because the "out of time" part of the title links back to Lovecraft, one of my favorite writers.

This is a strong album. Fans of Bathory, Skeletonwitch, Toxic Holocaust, Samhain, Satyricon, and others will want to check it out.
